What Is Marriage?

We have officially been married for four years! I can't believe it has already been that long. This blog was supposed to go up on our 4 year anniversary, but because I was in the middle of a move that day, it's happening now. Almost 3 months later. These last four years have taught me so much and our marriage has grown immensely. I was talking to a coworker before B deployed and when I told him that marriage gets better every single day, and that I love my husband more each day, he seemed so surprised! But, it's true. One of my favorite quotes is, "I love you more than I did yesterday, but not as much as I will tomorrow." Every day I'm amazed that I can love him more than I did before. Thanks to Brad Paisley for putting those words into a song! I'm no expert on marriage, and I know we have so many more years to go. But to me, these are the things that define the word marriage.

Marriage is...

  • Getting in a fight in the car on the way to the park, and telling your husband "Well let's just go home if you're going to be ornery." So he drives home, and you stay in the car in the garage while he goes inside. After a few minutes you decide to go in the house, but when you open the car door the alarm goes off because he locked the doors. You get inside and immediately make a snarky remark to him about locking you in the car, only to realize he is sitting on the stairs in tears, completely overwhelmed with everything that is going on. So you sit on the stairs and cry together.
  • Sitting in the bathtub when your husband gets home from work. He comes in, shuts the door, and proceeds to sit on the floor and eat not one, but TWO bagels, purposely picking at your biggest pet peeve. Then he gets in the tub with you, but no funny business happens. Instead he decides to make some "organic" bubbles, if you know what I mean.
  • Popping all the blackheads on his nose at once, resulting in a bruise on the tip of his nose that makes him look like Rudolph.
  • Locking yourself in the bathroom in tears after yet another pregnancy announcement from someone close to you, so your husband comes upstairs and you cry on the bathroom floor together.
  • Falling asleep talking to each other on FaceTime, only to wake up the next morning and realize neither of you hung up.

  • Popping massive zits on each other's bums.
  • Trying to decide whether you should spend your last $5 on Butterfinger Ice Cream or birth control, and settling on ice cream.
  • Stretching your leg clear across the king size bed, just to touch your husband's leg with the tips of your toes, because there is a dog that always sleeps between you.
  • Refusing to say "Goodbye," but instead, "I'll see you soon!"
  • Living in a tiny, 2 bedroom mobile home for a year so that you can have money to go on dates.

  • Your husband driving you to a football field at 11:00pm on a weeknight to watch the stars, because he knows you've been feeling cooped up lately.
  • Getting woken up early on Saturday by your husband to drive down the road and rescue a dog. During said rescue, your husband backs into a mailbox which leaves a permanent scratch in your car that you name Tucker, after the dog you saved.
  • Spending every weekend that you can collecting sea glass on the beaches.

  • Your husband sitting through 7+ hour long craft shows with you almost every Saturday in November and December, and never complaining once.

These are just a few of the things have, to me, defined our marriage. There are a million more, but these are some of my favorites!

Marriage is growing old together, but keeping your love young and exciting. It is giving up things you might want temporarily for the thing you know you want for eternity. Marriage is sacrifice, learning how to compromise, and promising to never give up, even when things get really really hard. Marriage was the biggest leap I ever took, and the biggest blessing I ever received. I'm so grateful every day for my marriage, and for the struggles and hard times that have made us stronger! Happy four years, baby! Here's to a million more!
